In June, Shopify made agentic commerce the default. Catalog now syndicates eligible products into ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini automatically, and checkout runs inside the chat. No setup, no fees beyond processing. The rails are laid, and they are good rails.

What actually changed

Before June, the question was whether an AI assistant could reach your store at all. That question is gone for Shopify merchants — everyone eligible is in. Which means the competition moved one layer down. An assistant answering “recommend a running shoe under €150” does not list the catalog; it picks. And it picks from what it can read: prices, availability, shipping terms, return windows, identifiers, ratings.

Shopify’s own launch numbers point the same way. Catalog data converts at about twice the rate of scraped data — structure wins. And the channel is no longer hypothetical: AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores grew 8× year over year in Q1, orders roughly 13×.

The gap the catalog cannot close

The catalog syndicates what exists. It does not invent your GTINs, your delivery times, your return policy, or the review data you never connected to markup. In our July check of 20 German stores, 0 of 20 had machine-readable shipping answers and 6 of 11 checkable product pages had no GTIN. Those stores are all in the catalog now. Their gaps went in with them.

My reading

Opinion, marked as one: access becoming free is the best thing that could happen to data quality — because it removes every excuse. The store that completes its data wins answers against stores that merely got listed. That is a smaller, harder game than SEO ever was, and it is measurable: either the assistant can read your shipping terms, or it cannot.

The free scan measures exactly this, signal by signal. The app that fixes and monitors it continuously is built and currently in Shopify’s app review.
